Building an outdoor pool cabana is like creating your own paradise and an entertainment center for enjoying your leisure hours. While planning to build a poolside cabana, you should make up your mind as to what amenities you would require - as there are different designs and types of cabanas.

If you are able to imaginatively design your poolside cabana, you can as well command the same comforts that you may have inside your home. Apart from providing relief from the oppressive summer heat, cabanas can serve as a store place for your pool chemicals, fresh towels, swimwear, pool accessories and a change room for guests. Some of the things you will need for building a perfect cabana are flooring tiles, kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, electrical fittings, doors, windows etc.

The most commonplace cabana is the tent type and this is quite a simple design and you can build it on your own with some tools and without any external professional help. You will have to erect four posts and provide a top roof. You can dress up with a smattering of bamboo or fringe. By keeping the structure open on all sides, you will have an uninterrupted view of your pool and also allow a cool breeze to gently waft across.

Although there are no specific rules regarding tent type poolside cabanas, they are usually of sizes of 8' x 12' or 10' x 14'. You must make sure that the floor space is adequate for the occupants and also remains proportional to the overall size of the swimming pool.

Of course, you will have to add a few accessories like a double chaise lounge, television, music system, couple of outdoor speakers etc for your increased comfort and pleasure. But please bear in mind that electronic items should not be retained outdoors as they will not be water safe.

If you have neither the time nor the inclination, you might as well buy a ready-made prefabricated cabana and have it quickly erected. By providing a few simple upgrades, you can convert the prefabricated cabana into a tiny dreamland. Different styles and sizes of prefabricated sheds will be available at any home improvement stores in your vicinity. You can add a few shelves for storage facilities, some furniture for rest and relaxation and a divider for privacy during change-over.

The ultimate in cabana is of course the guesthouse type which is truly aristocratic and can be built only by professionals. This entails plumbing work, fixing electrical fittings, and providing various accessories for maximum pleasure and comfort. A guesthouse type includes all the amenities like standard kitchenette, dining space, living room type of hall and bedroom.

Use water-resistant materials such as heavy-duty carpeting or rubber flooring to make the floor less slippery.

Equip the kitchen with a mini refrigerator, a double sink, single drawer dish washer and a microwave oven. Cabana would then become a home within a home where you can provide shelter, rest and relaxation to all your friends and other family members.

Whatever extra money you spend building a cabana is worth it as it is a long-term investment and a valuable extension to your home.
